In the olden days, the fine art of wood carving were reserved almost exclusively foor royal and relegius porpuses. Nowaday they are also produced for enjoyment and commercil. Man of every caste in Bali are artisants, and in Mas village live some of the most talented. Do not be surprissed when you visit an art shop to find a corps of wood carver making statues - the Balinese do everything in groups, and many of the young carvers work under the derection of a master. A carver select his seasoned block of timber - often, an ebony from Sulawesi then shapes the rough form with an axe. With a malet and dozens of small chisels, the carving is worked into its finished form an finally smoothened. The polish is nothing more than shoe shine.
